Day 3 of Crohns and Colitis Awareness Week

December 3, 2016 By //  by Dishing For Real

Are there any early signs to IBD or other autoimmune diseases?

When you google IBD symptoms you get….diarrhea, constipation, blood in stool, and urgency to go. By this point you could be in a full blown flare. What if there were symptoms before this to give you warning signs? Have you heard of leaky gut syndrome?

Think of your gut lining as a barrier that is keeping particles out of your system. When you have leaky gut the lining gets damaged. Particles are released into your bloodstream that are not meant pass through the barrier.

Some signs of leaky gut include:

  • food sensitivities
  • fatigue
  • joint pain
  • headaches
  • skin issues
  • allergies
  • thyroid conditions
  • bloating

Leaky gut can lead to or be present in an autoimmune disease.

What is an autoimmune disease?

An autoimmune disease is when your immune system begins to attack healthy cells because it believes they are foreign to your body. This can occur in almost any part of the body and a classic sign of an autoimmune disease is inflammation. There are over 80 autoimmune diseases. Crazy, I know! Lupus, IBD, hashimoto’s thyroiditis, endometriosis, multiple sclerosis, psoriasis, graves’ disease, rheumatoid arthritis….these are just a small handful of autoimmune diseases.

The great news is there are things can be done to heal your gut lining.

  1. Remove things like sugar, packaged foods, processed oils, and dairy from your diet. Some people have found great success removing grains. Also, remove stressful factors and environmental toxins.
  2. Replace your diet with real foods. Also, add healing foods like bone broth, fermented foods, and wild-caught fish.
  3. Repair your gut with supplements like l glutamine, slippery elm, licorice root, and digestive enzymes.
  4. Restore your gut flora (microorganisms that live in the digestive tract) with probiotics and prebiotics.
